Hi,
if i want to create a new frame with a new background using
default-frame-alist, emacs create a new frame with the new background
but only in the first part of the buffer displayed, the other part use
the initial X setting (i.e what is in .Xressources).

#+BEGIN_SRC lisp
(let ((default-frame-alist '((minibuffer . nil)
                             (width . 80)
                             (height . 24)
                             (left-fringe . 0)
                             (border-width . 0)
                             (menu-bar-lines . 0)
                             (tool-bar-lines . 0)
                             (unsplittable . t)
                             (top . 24)
                             (left . 450)
                             (background-color . "LightSteelBlue")
                             (foreground-color . "DarkGoldenrod")
                             (alpha . nil)
                             (fullscreen . nil))))

#+END_SRC

With these settings, if i create new frame with
switch-to-buffer-other-frame or make-frame-command,
you can see here the result:
http://tinyurl.com/3ghnol9

When using emacs -Q (no X settings) this doesn't happen.

Hi.

I can't reproduce this. There must be other steps that you do that causes
this. Can you give an example starting from emacs -q?

As i said, this happen only if you have some X settings.

Emacs.verticalScrollBars:off

Emacs.bitmapIcon:on
Emacs.alpha:80

#+END_SRC

xrdb -load ~/.Xressources

emacs -q

eval in scratch buffer:

Hello.

I still can not reproduce this.
If you write text in the black part of the buffer, does it use the right
background?

Hi.

Does removing Emacs.alpha from your X resources make any difference?

In this case it wouln't work in emacs23 too no?
But in emacs23 this doesn't happen.
And also on my desktop PC here it does the same.
(Same settings though)

Ok i have started an emacs compiled with your patch, and run it in
xephyr, it is the same, always a black background in EOB.

Hi.

Ok, that is something.
You can put a breakpoint or printout where the code for the patch is, and see
if you really get Expose events for the whole frame region. I suspect you
don't for some reason.

The screenshot looks like Ubuntu 11.04. Is that what you are running?

It could be a Compiz bug or setting.

Yes.

Maybe, i did same on my home pc (unbuntu 11.04 also) and problem
disapear also.
But i think it is more in the way emacs read the X configuration
(just a thought, because i have no knowledge of this) as this is very
similar with the problem i encounter some days ago (i.e the X font
setting overhidden) but now with background.

So maybe some problem in the way initial-frame-alist,
default-frame-alist and the initial X settings are treated?
(again that just an idea, as i know nothing of how emacs treat that)

Well anyway the problem seem to have disapear now and i can't reproduce.

It might very well be something in that area, it is a bit of a mess. Plus the
Gtk+ widgets also reads theme information.
It may also be some memory corruption/ovwerwrite that now has moved elsewhere.

Ok, I'll close this for now. Feel free to reopen if the problem comes back.
