It's just the label of the server:

(nnimap "NPR"
  (nnimap-address "localhost")
  (nnimap-stream network)
  (gnus-message-archive-group "nnimap+NPR:Sent")
  (nnimap-authenticator login)
  (nnimap-user "eric@paper-republic.org"))
