The original example looks odd to me, but I may just be misunderstanding the window machinery (not for the first time). But: (display-buffer-below-selected (current-buffer) '((window-min-height . 10) (window-height . fit-window-to-buffer))) I'd expect that to work as you describe (or perhaps with the alist in opposite order), and it doesn't.
