This bug report will be sent to the Bug-GNU-Emacs mailing list
and the GNU bug tracker at debbugs.gnu.org. Please check that
the From: line contains a valid email address. After a delay of up
to one day, you should receive an acknowledgement at that address.
Please write in English if possible, as the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators for other languages.
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug, and
the precise symptoms of the bug. If you can, give a recipe
starting from `emacs -Q':
Dear Hurd Hackers,
I can’t perfectly trace back why I get this breakage, but I decided to
tell you anyway since you might have better ways to diagnose it than
me.
I used C-x C-w to save a file while in html-mode, then entered /ftp:
and hit enter when the prompt asked me to [Confirm].
Now I cannot use C-x C-w or C-x C-f from that buffer anymore (from
other buffers I can, and C-x C-s still works, too). My messages buffer
gives me this error:
\ Opening connection for arne@ftp using ssh
Tramp: Opening connection for arne@ftp using ssh...done
byte-code: Process died
Do you have an idea what happened?
Best wishes,
Arne
PS: I just reloaded the file and now everything works again. It’s
still a nasty bug, though…
If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
`bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
For information about debugging Emacs, please read the file
/usr/share/emacs/24.2/etc/DEBUG.

You have tried to save your file on the machine "ftp", using ssh to
connect there. Is that what you intend?
Anyway, I could reproduce the problem locally, when ido-mode is
enabled. Without ido, there is just an error message, but no blocking
buffer or alike.
Unfortunately, I'm not an ido expert. I have seen in the past that ido
makes some strange things with Tramp, calling internal functions which
haven't been published publicly. Maybe it's time to clean up.

Hi Michael,

Argl, that happens when the hands go into autopilot… :)

That is not what I intended. I wanted to connect to
/ftp:user:password@ftpserver, but decided to just try confirming to
see if tramp would then show me the previously used ftp-logins (I had
forgotten my ftp-username and wanted to avoid looking it up :) ).
Since that led to finding a bug, I don’t regret it :)

Great! Thanks for checking!

That would be cool! Ido and tramp together are a really nice team, but
there are some rough edges which make them dangerous to recommend to
new users…
Best wishes,
Arne

<TAB> should have worked better for username completion, not <RET>.
> Since that led to finding a bug, I don’t regret it :)
I'm not sure it is a bug what you have detected. Ido and Tramp have
exactly done what you have asked for. <RET> is bound to
`ido-exit-minibuffer' (i.e., you have completed file name
insertion). And ido has even asked you to confirm this. What else do you
expect?

During these tests, I have found another error in recursive loading of
Tramp modules, which has been introduced recently. This one I could fix.
For the bug report, I believe I cannot do anything else. So I would like
to close it, if you don't oppose.

I've checked ido.el for occurences of Tramp functions. (last time I did
was years ago). Now, there is not too much about Tramp interna usage. I
would propose to apply `file-remote-p' instead of checking for regexps,
but this might be personal taste. And I would discourage people to apply
`tramp-ftp-file-name-p'; I don't understand why ftp must be handled
differently. I have no other proposal what to change; ido's internal
mechanery seems to work well wrt remote files.

I would expect that C-x C-w would still work even though I entered a
nonsensical path (probably after hitting C-g to abort).
The bug is not that it tried to open arne@ftp, the bug is that I had
to kill the buffer and reopen the file to be able to use C-x C-w again.

If the recursive loading fix fixes the issue that C-x C-f does not
work anymore, then sure. Otherwise I think it would be better to keep
it open…

Yepp, generally it is really nice!
Thank you for working on it!

You have confused Tramp. To cure it, you could apply
M-x tramp-cleanup-this-connection
See the Tramp manual (info "(tramp)Cleanup remote connections")

Can’t tramp find out itself, that it is confused?
I can now clean it, but every new user will be pretty confused…

Not so easy. There could be good reasons not to connect: timeouts,
connection interrupts, whatever. Sometimes it is better to let Tramp
resynchronize.
For example, there's an ongoing work to integrate mosh into Tramp. This
would allow to reconnect automatically, even if your laptop has been
offline for a while, and you have moved from work to home.

I know :-( But I have no better recipe.
Could we agree to close this bug?

That sounds pretty awesome!
> > I can now clean it, but every new user will be pretty confused…

I think I just found one:
The error I got was:
\ Opening connection for arne@ftp using ssh
Tramp: Opening connection for arne@ftp using ssh...done
byte-code: Process died
Is it possible to adapt that error message so it states:
\ Opening connection for arne@ftp using ssh
Tramp: Opening connection for arne@ftp using ssh...done
byte-code: Process died. If this happens repeatedly, try
`M-x tramp-cleanup-this-connection`
That would allow newbies to get out of the loop without killing the buffer.
> Could we agree to close this bug?
I think as long as tramp in the buffer still blocks writes and the user does
not get told how he can exit the block, the bug still persists and closing it
would just close the eyes against an existing problem (or worse: look like it
was fixed without providing a solution).
But if the error could just tell the user how to fix the condition, that would
suffice for closing the bug, I think: The error condition would no longer
require new users to kill the buffer.
Does that sound like a reasonable approach to you?
Best wishes,
Arne

I will try it. It breaks Tramp's philosophy not to comment on errors
reported by the system. There are so many different reasons a connection
could cause trouble, that in general the original messages are better
than Tramp trying to explain. And it is not always recommended to
cleanup a connection.

I see your point. Likely, I'm not a Tramp newbie ...

Thank you very much!
Emacs is such a great system, that I hate seeing people shun it because of
problems in border-cases (which still can feel quite crippling, because they
break the trust in the system).
Best wishes,
Arne

Liebe Grüße,
Arne

The following patch ought to do this. Could you, please, check whether
it fits your test case?

I've committed the patch to the trunk. Closing this big.
Best regards, Michael.

I now tried tramp-cleanup-this-connection and it did not fix the problem. I
still cannot use C-x C-f and C-x C-w without killing the buffer first.
I just do this:
C-x C-w ftp:RET
and I can no longer use tramp in that buffer. Could it be that some buffer-
local variable is set to a value which makes it break?
Best wishes,
Arne

I assume, you mean "C-x C-w /ftp: <RET>".

Maybe. Could you, please check it with an Emacs started with "emacs -Q",
and a dummy file (w/o local variables)?
Locally, I have no problem with that scenario.
