I cannot reproduce this with emacs -Q:

M-: and I enter: (setq new nil) then I get:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (void-variable nil)
  (setq new1 nil)
  eval((setq new1 nil) t)
  eval-expression((setq new1 nil) nil nil 127)
  funcall-interactively(eval-expression (setq new1 nil) nil nil 127)
  call-interactively(eval-expression nil nil)
  command-execute(eval-expression)

And I cannot find out how I arrived to it.

Perhaps you've redefined `setq' somehow?

Or something is wrong with `nil`, try e.g. (unintern "nil") [but please
in a separate session].

Michael.

More information was requested, but no response was given within a
month, so I'm closing this bug report. If the problem still exists,
please respond to this email and we'll reopen the bug report.
