Perhaps only ~/.mailcap (and not the system-wide one which, presumably,
is the one that distributions installed, no?) is the one to take
precedence? I don't remember any distribution creating a mailcap for me
in my $HOME, but admittedly, i haven't used many different distros.

I vaguely remember systems with preinstalled ~/.mailcap files...

I've now proposed changing this on emacs-devel, so that ~/.mailcap
settings will always win.
