Yeah, that's not valid. This should be, though:
(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions
'((not gnus-thread-sort-by-most-recent-date)))
Note extra pairs of parentheses there, which this variable uses to mean
that `not' isn't a literal function, but a logical operator with special
meaning for sorting.
Anyway, closing this bug report...
