That's great. But sometimes we want to insert it right here, and without
the "-- ", e.g., before lots of

That seems like really niche functionality -- a signature goes at the
end (and the command is documented to do exactly that). If you want to
put the signature somewhere else, then doing so manually seems really
trivial.
So I'm closing this bug report.
