This bug report will be sent to the Bug-GNU-Emacs mailing list
and the GNU bug tracker at debbugs.gnu.org. Please check that
the From: line contains a valid email address. After a delay of up
to one day, you should receive an acknowledgment at that address.

Please write in English if possible, as the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators for other languages.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug, and
the precise symptoms of the bug. If you can, give a recipe
starting from `emacs -Q':

I sometimes have parts of the screen "undisplayed" such in the
example at http://screencast.com/t/qLMxmSLxYvJ8.

In the beginning, all the line was white (even the fringe!).

While moving the cursor around, some characters are redisplayed correctly.

Paging up and down makes the display correct again.

However, this is not occurring often, and not reproducible per se -- unluckily.

If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
For information about debugging Emacs, please read the file
c:/Program Files/Emacs-24.2/etc/DEBUG.

This is a clear sign that some redisplay optimization is applied when
it shouldn't be. IOW, Emacs mistakenly thinks the display does not
need to be redrawn.

> However, this is not occurring often, and not reproducible per se -- unluckily.

When that happens next, try typing "M-x". Just "M-x", without any
command. If that doesn't help, try "M-x redraw-display RET".

More importantly, post the result of "C-h l" (that's ell, not the
digit one), and try to remember what were you doing immediately before
the incident. Also, in what mode was the current buffer.

I'll do, to be sure.

Yep, the lossage buffer.

It the case I posted here, it was an Org mode buffer. But all my buffers are
(more or less) either in Org, or in Gnus/Message.

Anyway, I'll give you the required information next time it happens.

Best regards,
Fabrice

That did not help, in the Org buffer I was just looking at...

> If that doesn't help, try "M-x redraw-display RET".

That did work -- in fact, before applying it! Why? Because I typed M-x red
TAB, and a buffer came on the right side of my screen, full with completions.
When that one appeared, the display was corrected.

Just browsing the file with C-v/M-v.

I'm sorry, but, by answering to this email first, I'd lost what you wanted
from C-h l.

Best regards,

This time, I could write redraw-display without TAB'ing. It did redraw the
screen correctly.

And here the lossage view you asked for:

That's expected. Popping another buffer requires a thorough
redisplay.

In that case, please tell what customizations do you have that are
related to scrolling, and perhaps also post the Org file you were
browsing, or part thereof.

Also, you should probably update to the latest trunk or branch,
whatever you were tracking, to make sure the problem still exists in
the latest codebase.

If I'd see there only C-v/M-v, that's not a big loss.

It's my .emacs LP'ed (Literate Programming) in a big Org file. Find it there:

https://www.assembla.com/code/emacs-leuven/git/nodes/master/emacs-leuven.txt

Could you reproduce it? I have it quite often. Another example, if that can
be helpful:

http://screencast.com/t/2J3VIgiGn

Though, I consider that minor.

Just to let you know, this problem still occurs with GNU Emacs 24.3.50.1
(i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) of 2012-12-03 on MS-W7-DANI.

As asked by Stefan, I'm testing the emacs-24 branch.

And I can confirm the above problem is *still* occurring with:

  GNU Emacs 24.2.91.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) of 2012-12-15 on MS-W7-DANI

I'm sorry, but I cannot reproduce the problem, using the file you
mentioned, at least not in "emacs -Q".

You have a lot of optional features turned on; any chance of finding
out some minimal subset of them that still causes the problem?

Because of heavy workload (with the end of year holidays and so on), I cannot
commit on being able to free up the time needed to do so, if this is
configuration related.

However, the first settings I'd suspect would be in the "Controlling the
display" block. I'm copying it in case it'd trigger some alarm for someone:

I *will* work with all these settings commented for the following hours and
days, just to see whether the problem appears or not -- but I won't be able to
dissecate all the other settings now, if not related to something there.

Not really configuration related. Rather, something in your
configuration triggers the bug. And it's undoubtedly a bug, since
redraw-display fixes the display: some redisplay optimization
somewhere decides it's okay to take a shortcut, which it shouldn't.

Thanks, I will try with some of these settings.

Thanks, that will help.

Another thought: I've observed that in Org buffers -- but I almost exclusively
work in such buffers, nowadays -- with "literate programming" aspects (I mean:
with code blocks inserted in the flow of the text).

And, something that's not on by default about those blocks is:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
;; fontify code in code blocks
  (setq org-src-fontify-natively t)
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Please add that as well in your test config, it could count!

Thinking more about it, I'm not sure (anymore) I've ever seen the display
problem in pure Emacs Lisp buffers, for example -- though, this may prove
wrong (assumption to be taken with lots of caution).

I hope we'll catch it!

After one day without my settings about "Controlling the display" (given
previously), I did not see the problem (yet?). Hence, a furious envy to say
that the "trigger" settings provoking the problem would be in that given
configuration. Just for you to know.

Take care that this conclusion is only based on time and observation, though.
But I'm quite confident about that first observation.

FYI, I did not undo the "fontify code" setting in my config for the moment.
Hence, that Org setting should not be the problem. Only one (or several) of
the other ones.

Best regards,
Fabrice

Where can I find this "pager" library, of the version you are using?

Do you still see the problem in the current Emacs? If so, did you
bisect your customizations further and found the "guilty" one(s)?

I did NOT notice this for quite a long time. You can safely close it.
