I'm running Mac OS 10.3.6 on a G4 Cube, trying to install Emacs. When
I attempt to run the configure script, I get the following four lines:
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... powerpc-apple-darwin7.6.0
configure: error: Emacs hasn't been ported to
`powerpc-apple-darwin7.6.0' systems.
Check `etc/MACHINES' for recognized configuration names.
I searched 'etc/MACHINES' for 'darwin', 'apple', 'macintosh' and
various related terms to no avail. I only saw the note on Yellow Dog.
The web page (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/emacs.html#Platforms)
states that Emacs should work under OS X, but I can't find any
indication of it in documentation.
I also found the '/mac' directory, but it seemed to have to do with
making Emacs run under Mac OS 9 and earlier. I hope this is the right
place to send this and I'm not just being inept.

There is no released version of Emacs that works on Mac OS X, yet.
The Mac OS X support is included in the CVS repository of Emacs, tho, where
it's been working well for a long while already.
You may find precompiled version via Google. Or you can compile it yourself
by checking it out of the CVS repository.

If you don't care trying a bleeding edge cvs version, i have built the OSX
installer from the CVS (dated Nov. 12 2004) with my 10.3.6 OSX and put it
there :
http://sebastien.kirche.free.fr/emacs_stuff/EmacsInstaller-cvs20041112.dmg.bz2
It is built with «make-package --self-contained» so it will install an
Emacs.app in /Applications folder.

Sébastien Kirche
