Gnulib's dup2 implementation uses so many non-trivial interfaces (exceptions, invalid parameter handlers, etc.) that I'd prefer not to deal with for a feature that needs to be rock solid and dependable. In any case, this is an almost orthogonal issue to what is being discussed here. The issue here is not _whether_ to redirect stderr, but rather _where_to_ to redirect it.
