I guess you should temporarily remove the invisible property?  Like
this:

  (let ((invis-spec buffer-invisibility-spec)
        indent)
     (remove-from-invisibility-spec '(outline . t))
     (setq indent
           (save-excursion (search-forward " a") (current-indentation)))
     (setq buffer-invisibility-spec invis-spec) indent)
