Thanks, but does this work in buffers where bidi-paragraph-direction
is nil?  AFAIR, it->paragraph_embedding is only set when the buffer
has a non-nil value of bidi-paragraph-direction.

Did you try that in TUTORIAL.he, as I suggested?
