Currently the first character in a line appears right after the line
number. It was possible to insert a space in linum-mode using format
strings but It is not possible to do so in display-line-numbers-mode.

No, it isn't, at least not by default. There's a single space
character between them.
So if you see something different (try "emacs -Q" first), we will need
a recipe to reproduce what you see.

You can control the width of the line-number field, which should
provide the same functionality (if needed). But it shouldn't be
needed.
