Dired has long had that, and similar "redundancies", so that all marking stuff is on *, all regexp stuff is on %, etc. VC-dired can use any keys it likes, as soon as it uses only its own prefix key. Separate it from Dired - don't let it interfere - and you can use whatever you like in its map. That's the point.
