Hmm.  ssh can't always pass environment variables because the r= emote admin may have disabled it, so INSIDE=5FEMACS isn't always reliable= .  Is testing for TERM =3D=3D =22dumb=22 sufficient=3F
 
I will have to see whether my current provided allows me to pass INS= IDE=5FEMACS.
