True.  I suggest to invoke Emacs with the same -bg and -fg
command-line arguments as you did with xterm, and then Emacs should
set the background-mode correctly.  (At least it does that for me in
the CVS version, which is the only one I can try that in where I type
this.)

The CVS version of Emacs also supports an rxvt-specific feature that
allows Emacs to find out the default colors automatically.
