C-x 2 M-x vc-dir        ; or whatever they use for cvs-examine

Window handling is obviously very complicated, and I think emacs-devel
is a better place to discuss general questions like these. (I have no
idea if bug#1806 can ever be closed; I'd rather this one did not go
the same way.)
