Annoying, indeed. It happens because displaying completions is allowed to steal space from all other windows in the same combination and there is no easy way to automatically return the space to them unless you have customized =E2=80=98window-combination-resize=E2=80=99 to t (if the latte= r doesn't annoy you elsewhere, try it).
