Emacs has a function process-status that returns
a process's status. Possible statuses include
run -- for a process that is running.
stop -- for a process stopped but continuable.
exit -- for a process that has exited.
signal -- for a process that has got a fatal signal.
To implement this, Emacs keeps track, for each of its
child processes, what that process's status is.
Emacs updates the information that it records about
a child process whenever it's notified about
a child process status change.
