It would be great if there was an option to start Emacs in a maximized
window, i.e., something like "emacs -fs" except the window would be
maximized (and not full screen).  Thank you.

Please yuse M-x report-emacs-bug.  That way we can see useful information, 
like which Emacs version you are using.

Emacs 23.2 has an -mm option to do just this.  I assume you are on an earlier 
version, so an upgrade is in order.
