Thanks Martin,

The debugger run is posted above.  If I have more time I can try to make
a test case.  I think it should be enough to define the function I did
and byte-compile it.  Then make emacs be waiting with the minibuffer
active.  Then from a terminal:

  emacsclient -e '(my::switch-to-buffer "buffer")'

That's almost certainly not exactly correct and I haven't tried it, but
it's the basic idea.
