Hi,
the new behaviour (i.e. showing the splash screen even if a filename
argument to visit had been given) it is very misleading and quite
counter-intuitive. if i start emacs with a filename, i expect that
file to appear immediately. if that doesn't happen, i figure emacs
hasn't actually opened the file at all..

This behavior will be altered in Emacs 22.2. If you like, you can try
out the new system in the 22.1.90 pretest at
http://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/, or Emacs CVS.
