Packages versions:

GNU Emacs 22.1.50.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.14)
 of 2007-10-24 on mash

ElScreen 1.4.5 (December 6, 2006)

I'm using Gentoo Linux and I reported a bug to the gentoo maintainer
against emacs-cvs and elscreen. The original message was:

+--
Using emacs-cvs-22.1.50 and elscreen-1.4.5 I've found some
problems. Trying to use "M-x calculator" I get the following message:

split-window-vertically: Window height 2 too small (after splitting)

Also, opening a latex file using auctex and then running M-x ispell the same
message is shown.

Using elscreen-toggle-display-tab to disable the tab fixes the problem. Any
ideas where to look for?

the bug report can be found here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196996

The mantainer suggested that I should report this bug directly to you

Regards
