Ok -- thanks for the response.

At this point I believe it to be a problem with the version of GCC I'm using. I built this GCC 4.1.2 and my guess is that I did something wrong in this step (although other binaries are building just fine). I am creating an incompatibility somehow with the way I'm building GCC.
