some modeline helper balloons clipped off left edge of screen

Start emacs, do say C-x C-b to make the modeline full of goodies. Now
move the mouse slowly along the modeline.  Helper balloons pop up as
we move over the various items there, however, some have their
beginning words clipped off the left edge of the screen.
(C-h l shows several  <help-echo>.)
Putting the mouse on the leftmost place of the modeline works ok, but
if instead placed on the rightmost place, we see the clipping.

Also, just start emacs.  All there in the modeline is just "---GNU
Emacs---".  In this state putting the mouse on the modeline does
noting at all.

Gnus puts the version in my headers, Emacs/21.2. BTW, I use 600x800
resolution. http://jidanni.org/comp/config_en.html mentions deeper my
setup.

how about using the development Emacs?

Well, it is hidden too here in gnus, but every gnus produced message has it
in the header, so if I were you, I'd tell rmail not to hide that header
for you, and even instead, highlight it, blink it :-), as it seems
like a good thing to know for you. I.e. unless the user mentions
differently, the one in the header is what he's using.  I mean all
these bytes added to each message over the years and the Chief
GNUisance is not benefiting from them?!

What fun would that be then?  Seriously though, you overestimate my
bandwidth, 56K, with another coin dropping every 10 minutes, and even
if I wanted to blow the dough, they said my mountaintop hideaway is
too far for ADSL etc. Plus, with my new multifaceted life, I don't
even use the computer every day. And, with my Limited Edition Brain, I
leave the setting up to Debian Sid, which I freshen with CDs maybe
once a year on some rare trip to town.  Anyway, it seems 4 out of 5 of
my bugs are still there anyway, not bad.

This makes me worried about other headers Good Times you may have been
missing over the years, e.g. X-Face, and maybe even sounds and smells.
(I flunked the X-face creation course, and probably would feel guilty
about the extra bytes sent anyway.)

(BTW, sure wish supercite could deal with RMS style TAB quotations,
hence I added the notRMS> above.)
