Before IRIX 6.5.10 the IRIX runtimes were based on the MIPSpro 7.2
compilers.  Since 6.5.10 they have been generated by the MIPSpro 7.3
compilers.  

If you want to experiment you could install the new runtime patches 
(3911 and maybe 4330 for C, 3742 for C++, and 3743 for fortran) from
http://www.sgi.com/support/patch_intro.html on your 6.5.9 system and see
if that changes anything.
