Until recently I had this line in my .emacs in order to get the file path
into the title bar of emacs (I work with files with the same name in
different locations, don't even go there)

(setq frame-title-format "%f")

Last week I upgraded my system and it stopped working.

frame-title-format seems to be readonly in this new system

Emacs: 24.2.1 (i686-redhat-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.6.4) of 2013-06-11 on buildvm-12.phx2.fedoraproject.org
Window Manager: Gnome 3
OS: Fedora 18
Linux Kernel: 3.9.6-200.fc18.i686.PAE

Like an idiot I don't have the exact stats for my old system

Emacs: approx 21
Window Manager : Gnome 2
OS: Fedora 13
Linux Kernel : ??

----

I got around it using modify-frame-parameters for 'name on a post command
hook.

Works for me. But my build is not a GTK build, perhaps this is
specific to GTK?

Thanks for checking. I might see if I can find the time to build from
source against an earlier gtk or other x toolkit. After my recent upgrade
my instinct is to wail and moan about Gnome 3 but I'm sure that's just me
being irrational. I'll mail to 14788@debbugs.gnu.org if I discover
anything.

Thanks again.

It works fine on Gtk 3 on Fedora 18 with Gnome 3. Can you reproduce the error when starting Emacs with -Q?

What happens when you evaluate

(setq frame-title-format "%b")

Also note that the title does not update immediately after evaluating
such a form. Does switching to another buffer help?

Yes. I reduced my .emacs file to a single line

(setq frame-title-format "%f")

I just get "emacs@" followed by the hostname in the title bar.

If you managed to get it working on the same system specs then I suspect
it must be something odd in the rest of my system configuration. I'll
start taking a look

Same thing happens.

Normally you get the basename of the file followed by " - emacs@" followed
by the hostname

With emacs -Q you just get emacs@hostname

You always get emacs@hostname if you just have one frame.
Also, note that -Q does not read your .emacs so you have to really evaluate the setq inside Emacs.

Not here, not with '(setq frame-title-format "%f")' in my .emacs. If
I invoke "emacs" (without -Q), I get the splash screen with nothing in
the title bar. If I then visit some file in the same single frame, I
see the file's full file name there.

I'm unable to reproduce this in Emacs 25. Are you still seeing this?

More information was requested, but no response was given within a few
months, so I'm closing this bug report. If the problem still exists,
please reopen this bug report.
