removed both tramp and recentf, still same problem...

Could you, pls, delete the file "~/.emacs.d/tramp" from the shell, and
start a new Emacs session?

Furthermore, do you use recentf? In that case, pls delete also
"~/.emacs.d/recentf" before you start Emacs.
