After clicking in the menubar but right of all menuitems, one can not access any buffer, or work with emacs alltogether.
The Cursor just freezes and the mouse arrow stays the normal pointing arrow.
Only the icons under the menubar are accessible but without effect.
Alt + F4 will issue the normal close dialog (ask for saving files).
The issue can be resolved with opening and closing an actual menuitem in the menubar.
After that, everything is back to normal.

Problems with menus and recent gtk versions in Emacs 23.1 are usually

GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 emacs
