Eli,

As you suggested, I tried changing (prefer-coding-system 'utf-8) to
(prefer-coding-system 'utf-8-unix).  Indeed, that makes the problem go
away.

I tested this patch on my system (with "(prefer-coding-system
'utf-8)").  It works.
