Subject: bug#4332: Emacs 23.1 on Solaris 10/11 uses scalable fonts for umlauts only
Date: Thu, 3 Sep 2009 16:56:24 +0200 (MEST)	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <200909031456.n83EuOCY019280@manam.CeBiTec.Uni-Bielefeld.DE> (raw)

I've recently switched to Emacs 23.1 on Solaris 10/11 (SPARC in this case),
and observed the following problem:

I've got the following X11 resource:

> xrdb -query|grep -i emacs
Emacs*Font: -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--18-180-75-75-m-110-*

When I view files with umlauts (e.g. the output of C-h h), I find that
non-umlaut characters are used from the font above, but umlauts are
from the corresponding scalable font instead, which looks ugly because
they don't exactly match in height and appearance. E.g. in the C-h h
output, there is among the Non-ASCII examples:

Gr=fc=df Gott

C-u C-x = on the r gives

        character: r (114, #o162, #x72)
preferred charset: ascii (ASCII (ISO646 IRV))
       code point: 0x72
           syntax: w which means: word
         category: .:Base, a:ASCII, l:Latin, r:Roman
      buffer code: #x72
file code: #x72 (encoded by coding system iso-2022-7bit-unix)
display: by this font (glyph code)
    xft:-Adobe-Courier-bold-normal-normal-*-18-*-*-*-m-110-iso10646-1 (#x54)

Character code properties: customize what to show
  name: LATIN SMALL LETTER R
  general-category: Ll (Letter, Lowercase)

There are text properties here:
  charset latin-iso8859-1

while on the =fc, I get

        character: =fc (252, #o374, #xfc)
preferred charset: latin-iso8859-1
		   (Right-Hand Part of ISO/IEC 8859/1 (Latin-1): ISO-IR-100)
       code point: 0x7C
           syntax: w which means: word
         category: .:Base, c:Chinese, j:Japanese, l:Latin
      buffer code: #xC3 #xBC
        file code: ESC #x2C #x41 #x7C
		   (encoded by coding system iso-2022-7bit-unix)
display: by this font (glyph code)
    xft:-adobe-Courier-bold-normal-normal-*-18-*-*-*-m-0-iso10646-1 (#x100)

Character code properties: customize what to show
name: LATIN SMALL LETTER U WITH DIAERESIS
old-name: LATIN SMALL LETTER U DIAERESIS
  general-category: Ll (Letter, Lowercase)
  decomposition: (117 776) ('u' '=308')

There are text properties here:
  charset latin-iso8859-1

[back]

This worked correctly in Emacs 22.1, and does again in CVS Emacs
(23.1.50), but the latter is unusable for several reasons I'll report
separately.

In GNU Emacs 23.1.1 (sparc-sun-solaris2.10, GTK+ Version 2.12.9)
