Dear Barry and Martin,
I try to set breakpoints with gud-mode -- C-c C-b is supposed to work
in any file visited by gud due to breakpoint or step -- alas, instead
I got the CCmode option to submit a bug report -- exactly what I want
;-)
Seriously, CCmode prevents any and all of the gud inferior mode
commands, such as C-c C-p (print expression around point in debugger).
Ouch...

How convenient. :) But I think you're mistaken that the C-c key
bindings are supposed to work in source files visited by gud. Quote
from the node "Commands of GUD" in the Emacs manual:
Here are the other special commands provided by GUD. The keys
starting with `C-c' are available only in the GUD interaction buffer.
The key bindings that start with `C-x C-a' are available in the GUD
interaction buffer and also in source files.
I.e. you have to use C-x C-a key prefix while inside a CC Mode buffer.
