Emacs 25.1 devotes `c' to the new command
`dired-do-compress-to', unfortunately.

Letter keys for`dired-do-*' commands are generally uppercase.
There are few exceptions: `k', `l', and `x'.

Please consider using `M-z' or `K' (uppercase k) instead for
`dired-do-compress-to'.

(Also, `c' is bound by Francis J. Wright's library `dired-sort-menu.el'
to `dired-sort-menu-toggle-ignore-case', which toggles ls-lisp switch
‘ls-lisp-ignore-case’ and updates the buffer.)

(There is also a typo in the doc string of `dired-compress-files-alist':
"the the".)

In GNU Emacs 25.1.1 (x86_64-w64-mingw32)
 of 2016-09-17
Windowing system distributor `Microsoft Corp.', version 6.1.7601
Configured using:
 `configure --without-dbus --without-compress-install CFLAGS=-static'

The binding has now been in place for years, so I think it's too late to
change now; closing.

Looks like this was fixed by:

commit 8e40429c960a9dd42103be9c41db5a3af7f9ee25
Author: Glenn Morris <rgm@gnu.org>
Date: Wed Nov 22 17:52:11 2017 -0500

    ; Fix some doc typos

That's not a good enough reason, IMO. Emacs 25 is
not very old, and it's unlikely that changing the
_default_ binding of this command would impact users
negatively.

Keys involving character `c' are used, in Dired, for
"copy", "comment", and "change" (marks). Keys for
compressing/uncompressing use char `z'.

And we use lowercase chars in Dired for other kinds
of things than `dired-do-*'.

In keeping with the use of char `z' for compressing
and uncompressing. Dired+ uses `M-z' for
`dired-do-compress-to'. I suggest that vanilla
Dired do likewise.
