We had that discussion there already, and I doubt whether it=E2=80=99d be= =20 worthwhile to repeat it. Of course you're free to take it there again if=20 you like. > The default behaviour has been changed already, and that change has > caused problems and will cause further problems. I expect that most of the practical problems have been shaken out=20 already with the changes published in Emacs 25.1 last year, so that most=20 of this cost has already been paid. > I propose restoring the default to what it was in Emacs 24. That kind of approach was proposed way back when. It doesn=E2=80=99t addr= ess=20 quotes in doc strings, though. More generally, a problem with this sort=20 of approach is that although it simplifies =E2=80=98message=E2=80=99 (obv= iously), this=20 is at the price of complicating everything else. I estimate we=E2=80=99d = need to=20 change 10,000 lines of Emacs source code to make that change to=20 =E2=80=98message=E2=80=99. (This is a just a quick estimate based on =E2=80= =98grep '".*`.*"'=E2=80=99.)=20 The resulting source code would typically be a bit harder to read than=20 it is now.
