Hey,
If I start Emacs on an x-terminal-emulator (in my case gnome-terminal) I
cannot input my brazilian 8bit chars. If I type "~a", which should
generate "ã" the screen will simply blink; If I type "'a", which should
generate "á" the 'Shell command:' prompt will appear at the minibuffer.
My keyboard is a pc105, us_intl keyboard, FWIW. If run in 'X mode' or
under the Linux console it will work. If it runs on gnome-terminal with
TERM=linux it will work but the UTF-8 (I'm using this encoding) will be
input uninterpreted, so inputing "áç" will generate "áç".
This bug was reported to Debian some time ago; you may be interested in

Thanks,
